Our story

About AM Publishers

A unique catalog of African and African-American music — and a mission to enrich performing arts education across the United States and beyond.

Who we are

AM Publishers is a music publishing subsidiary of the Intercultural Music Initiative (IMI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in St. Louis, Missouri. We provide a unique catalog of materials encompassing conductor scores, orchestra parts, miniature scores, MP3s, CDs, and performance licensing — available for purchase or rental.

Our catalog is dedicated to contemporary African and African-American art music, with a focus on works by composers including Fred Onovwerosuoke (Founder and Artistic Director of IMI), Akin Euba, Peter Henderson, and many others who have shaped the landscape of African music in the Western concert tradition.

Our mission

Proceeds from all AM Publishers sales support the operations of the Intercultural Music Initiative, which aims to enrich performing arts programming and music education across the United States and beyond. Every score purchased, every CD sold, and every licensing arrangement completed contributes directly to this mission.

IMI presents concerts, educational programs, and cultural exchanges that bring African and African-American music to new audiences — from schoolchildren encountering African rhythms for the first time to professional orchestras programming contemporary works by living composers of African descent.

Featured composer: Fred Onovwerosuoke

The heart of our catalog is the work of Fred Onovwerosuoke, a Nigerian-American composer, conductor, and educator whose output spans solo works, chamber music, choral compositions, and large-scale orchestral works. His music synthesizes African melodic and rhythmic traditions with Western compositional craft to create a voice that is both distinctive and deeply rooted.

His Chants of Africa: 12 Pieces for Mixed Voices is an exclusive AM Publishers publication, and his Twelve African Songs for Solo Voice and Piano has been praised by Grammy-winning soprano Karen Slack as "a beautifully crafted collection that every soprano should have in their repertoire."
